Have Your Ice Cream & Eat It Too

So you’ve turned around your personal fitness, you’ve finally found a sweet spot with your nutrition and you are well on your way to living a strong, healthy lifestyle. Can you indulge a little sometimes? The answer is yes. Balance may be a buzz word plastered all over the health and wellness sites online but it’s because it is the key to unlocking sustainable wellness.

I get asked a lot about my nutrition and while I’m conscious of it, it does not dictate my life. My #1 rule is train well and train EVERY SINGLE DAY. Whether it’s 90 minutes or 20. It allows me to earn a little buffer to enjoy a few things in life like dessert after dinner because life with dessert is simply a better life. I remember when I used to personal train and consult, my clients would always come into my office thinking they had to torture themselves by fuelling themselves with just leaves and water in order to get ahead. I would tell them, “oh okay, that’s great. I’m sure you’ll lose a quick 5 pounds by Monday and then eventually get so frustrated and dissatisfied that you’ll be destroying one of those game day specials from Dominos”. The point is, if your lifestyle isn’t truly sustainable, then why bother?

The trick is to work hard, play smart. Working hard, pushing your body’s limits and changing the composition of your body. Less fat, more muscle, boom. What I mean by play smart is to live a little but make better choices and paying attention to ingredients. After I train at night and put the game on and open my laptop to work a little, I get hungry. Rather than reach for potato chips and junk, I munch on smarter options like nuts or my new love of my life, GOODNORTH ice cream. The first time I had it in my hand and I read the label..”360 calories…up to 22 grams of protein…”, I was stunned. It’s like when you learn Tesla has a fully electric car AND goes 0-60mph in under 3 seconds! Naturally, I had to put it to the test and I tried all four flavours. Cookies and Cream, Caramel, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Mocha Chocolate Biscotti. Well, they’re frigging terrific. As in, absolutely delicious and no sensation at all that it’s so low in calories. Caramel was definitely my favourite so you gotta try that one. GOODNORTH is 100% Canadian made which I especially dig and there are NO artificial flavours or sweeteners. And 21 grams of protein! Not to sound like a jock or anything but that is a huge plus because protein intake isn’t always the easiest thing to do living a busy professional lifestyle. You’re always on the go and it’s sometimes hard to keep up.

So here’s the deal, we all want to be high-performance, discerning people. It’s supposed to be what our generation is all about, right? So be one. Train hard, be disciplined with your nutrition and make the smart but enjoyable decisions. Stay on track with your fitness journey but stop every once in a while and fill your yap with cookies and cream ice cream. My new thing? Take the pups out for a hike and going home and making waffles, berries and ice cream brunch. Why? Because I earned it and it’s delicious. This isn’t about dieting, this is about no compromise. Have your ice cream, and eat it too.
