One belief I have maintained through the years is the system of balance. Life is a gift that ought to be enjoyed but life also isn’t a gift to misuse by punishing your body. Your body is your vessel through this crazy life and it’s on you to maintain it, train it, challenge it, mold it and fuel it. When the time comes to open wide for that big burger and fries from the truck on the side of the highway, that ice cream cone with triple brownie bits on that summer night or that red velvet cake at your buddy’s birthday….it’s the decisions and lifestyle we make in between that make those moments enjoyable without regret.
One challenge I’ve had the last two years, especially as my appetite has increased, is the art of snacking. Yes, the art. I’m constantly finding myself at home, watching the game, plugging away on my laptop and feeling the urge to snack. I tried everything but couldn’t find something that kept me in check until I found that gorgeous little shelled nut, Wonderful Pistachios, The Fit Nut.
When I first connected with my friends at Wonderful Pistachios, they sent a box filled with all four flavours: Roasted & Salted, Unsalted, Salt & Pepper and Sweet Chilli. When that after dinner craving kicked in, I turned to pistachios and was instantly hooked. They’re absolutely frigging delicious. Sweet Chili is definitely my #1. I immediately looked for ways to incorporate pistachios into my healthy eating regimen and quickly started reaching for them beyond that after-dinner snack.
My day is broken up into sections from morning meetings, to afternoons back at home working, then gym, then errands, then eventually back home to check on my little boys. Throughout the day, Wonderful Pistachios are a great snack to help bridge the gap between lunch and my early evening workout. I plug away at my projects at my kitchen island and crunch away all afternoon. They’re a great pre and post workout snack.
There’s also the “Pistachio Principle.” The idea that the shells left behind while eating in-shell pistachios may provide you with a visual cue for how much you’ve consumed and can help control your snacking so you do not over-indulge. I started to notice that as I filled up my little espresso mug I use to collect the shells, I felt just right when I got to the top which is about 3/4 of a cup or so.
